Steven L. Moody
Steven Moody is an educator with a doctorate (EdD) in curriculum and instruction who will provide his vast skills, experience, and knowledge of school education programs, management, finance, education law, and community outreach to NCVA. He is currently Assistant Education Director/Principal of Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton, North Carolina. From 2002 to 20013, he headed the Education Department at Western Youth Institution, a prison youth facility that was combined with Foothills. He facilitates an education program averaging 350 juvenile offenders daily, offering curriculum that includes early literacy and ABE programs, GED and freshmen level college courses, and introductory vocational classes. He supervises a staff of 32 certified educators providing special education, core curriculum, and Title I services, as well as numerous GED and vocational instructors from Western Piedmont Community College. He designed and implemented expansion of the curriculum to include more vocational classes, employment and transitional skills classes, and remedial reading.
Prior to moving to North Carolina, Steven was principal of First Baptist Christian School; Mishawaka, Indiana, from 1997 to 2001. He assisted and supervised faculty and staff in the day-to-day operations of the school including providing marketing information and promotional needs to the public; coordinating a parent support organization; communicating organizational needs and desires with church boards; implementing policy; assisting teachers with implementing curriculum; maintaining discipline by counseling students and contacting parents; and observing and evaluating faculty.
His professional education career began as a teacher and curriculum coordinator at Trinity Christian School; Concord, New Hampshire, from 1985 to 1993. While at Trinity Christian School he developed and implemented lesson plans for a multi-grade classroom and school technology program for computer literacy; evaluated students regularly maintaining accurate student records; communicated with parents and students as needed; created and operated a cost-saving curriculum rotation at various levels; selected textbooks and coordinated book orders; developed scheduling for grades 7-12; and maintained contacts and communication with the community on a Chamber of Commerce business partnership committee.
Steven has presented numerous workshops and published numerous papers addressing education issues, including juvenile offenders, literacy, student self-esteem, alternative assessment, community building, community resources, and high school reform.
He is currently serving as Chairman of the Board, New Dimensions Charter School; at-large-member of the Burke County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council; and member, Burke County Crime Prevention Council. He recently served on the North Carolina Youth Accountability Task Force/Legislative Study Group (2000-2010) and Burke County Red Cross Board of Directors (2004-2006).
Steven earned an EdD in curriculum and instruction from the University of Virginia in 2002 as well as an MS in educational administration (1993), and BS in elementary education (1985) from Bob Jones University. He is also certified in the state of North Carolina in the areas of school administration, curriculum specialist, elementary education, and preK-6.

Sara W. C. Struhs, Vice Chairman of the Board
Sara has an extensive history in working in education and Government. She most recently worked as a private contractor for the Foundation for Excellence in Education as the director of professional development. From 2002, Sara served under Governor Jeb Bush in various capacities. She was senior staff, Director of Professional Development in the Executive Office of the Governor, the Executive Director of the gubernatorial fellows program, and the transition team leader and legacy project lead. She served as the special advisor to the secretary of education in the Florida Department of Education from 2001-2002.
Brenda is a veteran teacher with 30 plus years in public school education. She has worked as a classroom teacher in Goldsboro City Schools, Wayne County, Onslow County and currently works for Duplin County. Earning her BS in Education and Masters in Middle School from East Carolina, she also has Ag Education certification from North Carolina State University. Brenda is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa which is an international honorary organization for women educators. She is also a member of the Camp Lejeune Staff Wives Club.
Mr. Martin is a technology professional with over 39 years of experience, including system operations, analysis, design, programming/coding and application development. Presently, he is a systems analyst and senior manager at the University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine, previously a senior applications developer at SAS Institute. Mr. Martin is a proud graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, Masters Computer Science and Clemson University, Bachelors of Science in Chemistry. He is a talented musician performing in various ensembles including the Duke University Wind Symphony and advocates for musicianship as a founder, president and member of the North Carolina Saxophone Ensemble.
Dr. Steven Peters
Dr. Peters, Director of Psychology, Cherry Hospital, Goldsboro, NC a psychiatric hospital serving 38 counties. He is active on the Executive Leadership Team developing strategic goals, policy development, and hospital administration. Dr. Peters is a Forensic Examiner for patients adjudicated as Incapable to Proceed and Director of the hospital's Assaulted Staff Action Program. In addition to working for Cherry Hospital, he is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Medical University of the Americas and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Saba University School of Medicine.
Dr. Peters is a proud graduate of Carson-Newman College Graduating Cum Laude with Honors in Psychology. He has a Master of Arts, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Doctor of Psychology, Illinois School of Professional Psychology, Chicago, Illinois.
He has been awarded the Psi Chi Service Award, Outstanding Student of Psychology, Psi Chi Award for Excellence in Psychological Research, YSN Lake County Service Award and the Mental Health Association of Wayne County President's Award.
Daniel J. Swartz
Mr. Swartz is a human capital specialist and financial manager with over 13 years of experience. His expertise includes the strategic design of human capital goals, protocols, talent management, recruitment, retention and, technology. Additionally, he has expertise in school staff turn arounds, school culture design, project management, and public speaking. Currently, he is the managing director of Resolve Talent Consulting, an agency which advises educational organizations in the areas of staffing, academics and, technology. Mr. Swartz is a proud graduate of Gardner-Webb University with a degree in Business Administration. While there he played on the football team and was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
