Testing and Assessment FAQs

What tests are required as part of the program?

Students who are enrolled in North Carolina Virtual Academy are required to take the following tests:

  • Lesson assessments
  • Unit assessments
  • Semester assessments
  • Diagnostic and formative assessments to measure growth and mastery of grade level standards NCVA utilizes the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) for both reading and math. These computer-adaptive assessments are offered 3 times a year at the beginning, middle, and end of year to track student growth throughout the year. The data from these assessments is utilized to shape instruction for the benefit students.
  • North Carolina End of Grade assessments – these State-mandated assessments are administered the last 10 days of school and are utilized to create the School Report Card while also tracking student growth in attending the school. These scores are not counted as part of the final grade.
    • 3rd Grade – reading and math assessments administered primarily as multiple-choice tests. If a student has not sufficiently been deemed proficient in the reading portion of the End of Grade and was not proficient on the Beginning of Grade reading assessment, then students will be administered the Read to Achieve assessment as another multiple-choice test to
    • 4th Grade – reading and math assessments administered as multiple-choice tests
    • 5th Grade – reading, math, and science assessments administered primarily as a multiple- choice test. The math assessment could include some gridded response questions.
    • 6th Grade – reading and math assessments administered primarily as a multiple- choice test. The math assessment could include some gridded response questions.
    • 7th Grade – reading and math assessments administered primarily as a multiple- choice test. The math assessment could include some gridded response questions.
    • 8th Grade - reading, math, and science assessments administered primarily as a multiple- choice test. The math assessment could include some gridded response questions.
  • North Carolina End of Course Assessments – these State-mandated assessments are administered the last 5 days of each semester and are utilized to create the School Report Card while also tracking student growth in attending the school. The individual student score for each state assessment counts as 20% of the final grade for the course.
    • Math 1 – primarily a multiple-choice assessment but could include some gridded response questions
    • English 2 – primarily a multiple-choice assessment but it does include some open-ended written response questions
    • Biology – a multiple choice assessment
    • Math 3 – primarily a multiple-choice assessment but could include some gridded response questionsOther state required assessments

Do I have to participate in state testing?

Students enrolled in NCVA are required to participate in ALL state testing. Participation is a mandatory requirement of the school.
