A Young Author’s Journey: How Kamani Inspires During National Reading Month

March is National Reading Month, and we are excited to introduce you to Kamani, a thriving 4th grade student – and budding author – here at North Carolina Virtual Academy.
Inspired to Write
Kamani’s inspiration is her Learning Coach – and grandmother – Rosetta. After watching her grandmother write and journal for years, Kamani found that writing was a wonderful way to express herself. After a family health crisis, this passion for writing helped Kamani find courage in facing her fears. She also knew she could not be the only student feeling that way.
Being Brave
So, what did Kamani do? She self-published her first book on Amazon, “As Brave as You,” about facing challenging situations by believing in yourself. The book is a heartwarming tale about a young girl named Mia, who loves exploring but often hesitates when faced with challenges.
With her loyal friend Lily by her side, Mia feels safe—until one day, she must face her fears alone. Kamani hopes Mia’s inspiring journey will help other kids realize the bravery inside of them, too.

Supporting a Passion
Having the flexibility and support of her team at NCVA, virtual learning has given Kamani the opportunity to embrace her passion.
According to Rosetta, the family has been given every opportunity to make Kamani’s education a success – individual learning coaches, learning coach support groups, strong curriculum, and wonderful teachers that Kamani has connected with.
“There is a great curriculum, wonderful teachers and learning coaches – it’s like a three-way approach. It sets everyone up for success,” says Rosetta.
Kamani is currently working on another book but is keeping the theme of that one close to the vest… for now.
Keep up the courage, Kamani – we take inspiration from you and your family!
