NCVA’s Cappie Excels in Jiu-Jitsu and Online Learning

Stories & Spotlights
Student Spotlight: Cappie

Meet Cappie, an eighth grader at North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), who is balancing high-level jiu-jitsu training with virtual schooling – and winning medals while doing it.

Finding Love for Her Sport

Just before Cappie turned nine, her parents signed her up for a three-month jiu-jitsu class. Initially, Cappie was not a fan, but after executing a sweep successfully, a light went off about the sport, and she has loved it ever since.

Cappie now trains five to six days a week, with two-hour high-intensity training sessions. She is      an orange belt, which is the second highest level in the children’s ranking system and considered to be an advanced athlete in the sport. Cappie is part of a higher-level competition team – equivalent to an all-stars team – and has earned the nickname “Killer Cap”.

Because the sport is year-round, Cappie takes very little time off from training. In 2025, she has already competed in two Fuji BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) events, winning a total of one bronze, two gold and five silver medals.

Medaling in Athletics and Education

For the last five and a half years, Cappie has been part of the NCVA family. NCVA has been the best program for her and her family, particularly with all her training and travel to competitions.

As long as she has internet access, Cappie can study anywhere, which she is so grateful for. “I had an hour before a competition, and I was working on a unit test. The next hour, I was fighting. So, this has been amazing with my schedule,” said Cappie.

Not only is Cappie winning on the mat, for the past two years she has served as Vice President of the Junior Honor Society. One of the highlights of serving in that capacity is the community service requirement. Working in the community has confirmed to Cappie that she ultimately wants to own a gym and be a coach to young children.

We have no doubt that you will accomplish that, Cappie, and become a mentor in the sport of jiu-jitsu!
