Finding Stability in the Storm: One Family’s Journey with NCVA

Stories & Spotlights

When Hurricane Helene swept through western North Carolina last fall, many families were left without power, communication, or a sense of security. For one North Carolina Virtual Academy family, who lives in McDowell County, the storm was a reminder of how unpredictable life can be, but also how strong community and flexibility can make all the difference.

“Our power was off for an extended period of time,” said Misty, mom of Allie and Olivia. “We were fortunate enough to have a whole-house generator, but propane was hard to get. Everyone was trying to do the same thing, just get through.”

Even though their home was safe, Misty shared that the experience was isolating. “You go three miles down the road and see complete devastation. We had survivor’s guilt – it’s very real. But being connected to our church and having the school ready to meet us where we were made all the difference.”

Support That Doesn’t Stop When Life Does

When communication lines came back online, Misty said NCVA’s response was immediate and reassuring.

“The first emails that came in said, ‘Don’t worry. Everything is going to be fine. Let us know how you were affected – if you need housing, if you need anything.’ That was so comforting,” Misty recalled. “Knowing NCVA was there waiting on us meant we could focus on helping our neighbors and our community without worrying about the girls’ schooling.”

That peace of mind, Misty says, is one of the main reasons her family has stayed with NCVA.

Finding the Right Fit

Allie and Olivia joined NCVA when the pandemic closed local schools. Misty, who had been a substitute teacher in McDowell County, remembers seeing teachers struggle to connect online for the first time.

“It’s hard enough to connect with students in person. Imagine trying to do that through a computer screen – it was overwhelming,” she said. “I started researching other options and realized NCVA was exactly what we needed.”

Allie, now a senior in high school, and Olivia, a ninth grader, immediately felt the difference. “From the moment they signed on, I could tell the teachers were trained for this. They knew how to engage students online and keep them interested.”

Learning – and Living – on Their Own Schedules

Thanks to the flexibility that the school offers, every day looks a little different for each of the girls.

“Allie’s first class is culinary at 9:15 a.m. It’s two steps from her bed to her desk,” Misty laughed. “Olivia, on the other hand, is up at 7 a.m. every day. She checks her teacher emails, does a Bible study, and sticks to her schedule like clockwork.”

Olivia, Misty added, is also an avid crocheter – “the youngest little old lady I know,” she joked – while Allie is an artist exploring opportunities with the Savannah College of Art and Design.

“NCVA gives them both the structure and space they need,” Misty said. “One thrives on routine, and one needs flexibility. They both get that here.”

Education with Heart

Over the years, the sisters have been part of several clubs – from Pokémon and LEGO to psychology and scrapbooking. Misty says these experiences have helped them develop friendships and life skills.

“They’re learning how to communicate and connect, which are things kids today often miss out on,” she said. “Even when my girls want to connect outside of class, NCVA helps facilitate that safely. It’s so thoughtful.”

As a parent, Misty says she couldn’t be happier. “I have 150% confidence that my children are getting an exemplary education. The curriculum is top-notch, the teachers are amazing, and they include every type of learner.”

A Grateful Outlook

Between the challenges of Hurricane Helene and finding stability in virtual learning, Misty says NCVA has been more than a school for her family.

“It’s peace of mind,” she said. “When life happens, NCVA is there. Steady, supportive, and ready to help us keep moving forward.”
