Behind the Scenes, Making a Difference: Meet NCVA Advisor Mrs. Mosley
At North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), students are surrounded by a team that supports them both academically and personally. Among those dedicated staff members is Mrs. Mosley, a Student Support Advisor who describes herself as a “sideline cheerleader” for students and families.
While students may spend most of their time interacting with teachers, Mrs. Mosley works behind the scenes to make sure everything is running smoothly.
“Day to day, I’m that sideline cheerleader,” she said. “You know I’m there, but you don’t necessarily see me because you’re in the game.”
For Mrs. Mosley, that role means closely monitoring student progress, checking grades and attendance, and stepping in early if a student begins to fall behind.
Supporting Students and the Learning Coaches Behind Them
At NCVA, elementary students learn at home with the help of a Learning Coach, typically a parent or guardian. Because of this structure, Mrs. Mosley spends much of her time helping those adults create routines and stay organized.
“With virtual learning, it’s really hard to get into a routine,” she explained. “So I help Learning Coaches establish healthy habits, time management, and motivational strategies for their students.”
She keeps in touch through calls, texts, and emails – often communicating with dozens of families each day. Whether a student misses a few days of school or a family needs help navigating technology, Mrs. Mosley is there to help connect the dots.
“Communication is key when it comes to virtual learning,” she said. “I’m that bridge between the Learning Coach and the teacher.”
Building Community Through Connection
While academics are important, Mrs. Mosley also focuses heavily on helping students build social connections. Each week, she hosts optional virtual “social sessions” where students can relax, interact with peers, and practice social and emotional learning.
Activities range from crafting snowflakes to sharing jokes – though sometimes the kids steal the show.
“One of my first socials was a joke session,” she laughed. “I had all these jokes prepared, and the kids just stared at me. Finally, they said, ‘Miss Mosley, we’ve got jokes!’ So, I let them take over.”
These sessions help recreate the sense of community students might experience in a traditional classroom setting.
“Statistically, the more involved a child is, whether it’s a classroom or virtual, the more successful they’ll be.”
A Career Built on Helping Others
Mrs. Mosley is now finishing her seventh year at NCVA, but her journey into education began long before that. After years serving in youth ministry, she discovered a passion for mentoring and life coaching. She later earned a psychology degree specializing in counseling and eventually transitioned into education.
Her early work included coordinating one of the first online learning programs at a local high school and serving as a dropout prevention coordinator.
Those experiences helped shape the advisor she is today.
“I absolutely love it,” she said. “I literally tell my team all the time how blessed I feel. I don’t take it for granted.”
Caring for the Whole Family
Recognizing that Learning Coaches also need encouragement, Mrs. Mosley created a special quarterly gathering called “Afternoon Tea Time with Mrs. Mosley.”
During these sessions, Learning Coaches can take a break, share experiences, and remind themselves to care for their own well-being.
“Sometimes they just need someone to say, ‘Take a few minutes for yourself,’” she said. “For me, it’s a cup of hot tea. For them, it might be something different – but everyone needs that moment.”
With more than 200 students on her caseload, Mrs. Mosley’s work touches hundreds of lives each year. But what she values most are the relationships that grow over time.
“You almost grow with the families,” she said. “I’ve worked with some for seven years. Watching their kids grow up – that’s really special.”
For Mrs. Mosley, being an advisor isn’t just a job. It’s a calling – and one she’s proud to answer every day.
