Giving Students a Second Chance: Credit Recovery Program at NCVA
For students at North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) who struggle to pass a course, the path to graduation can feel uncertain. That’s where Dr. Brown, a former middle school science teacher and school administrator, steps in. This year, Dr. Brown leads NCVA’s Credit Recovery Program, offering students the support and structure they need to regain lost credits and stay on track.
A Program Built on Understanding
“When I first started leading credit recovery, I realized it’s more than just recovering a credit,” Dr. Brown explains. “Students fail for a reason. They don’t wake up intending to fail. Many need encouragement and support to believe in themselves and their abilities.”
Drawing on over 30 years of experience in education, Dr. Brown coordinates a program that focuses on both academic success and personal growth. The program covers four core subjects – math, English, science and social studies – with one dedicated teacher per subject, known as a credit recovery coach. Each coach works closely with students daily, monitoring progress and providing guidance.
Personalized Learning and Accountability
Credit recovery at NCVA is designed around individualized pacing. Students work through a self-explanatory curriculum in Canvas at their own pace – but always with structure. Dr. Brown and the coaches monitor progress meticulously, offering support when students fall behind.
“I send out individual pacing guides and follow up with students and their learning coaches,” Dr. Brown says. “It’s about accountability and encouragement. Sometimes, students just need to see the path in smaller steps, and we make sure they know they’re not alone.”
Engaging Families for Student Success
A key component to the success of the program is family involvement. Dr. Brown hosts family engagement sessions, helping parents and learning coaches understand how to support students at home. Workshops cover everything from time management to envisioning a successful future after graduation.
“The program is about more than one credit,” Dr. Brown emphasizes. “It’s about motivating students, teaching them life skills, and helping them become lifelong learners.”
Real Results. Real Impact
The program has helped hundreds of students regain credits and continue their education journey without a gap. Dr. Brown recalls a student who, despite falling behind in multiple subjects, completed all her credit recovery courses on time. “Her biggest takeaway was saying, ‘Thank you for believing in me,’” Dr. Brown shares.
Through a combination of structured support, personal accountability, and family engagement, NCVA’s Credit Recovery Program ensures that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
As Dr. Brown puts it, “I’m in it for them to win it.”
