From Smartphone to Spotlight: How an NCVA Teen’s Photo Earned a Place in a Museum

Stories & Spotlights
student photographer featured in magazine

When Tristan B. started experimenting with his iPhone camera in 2021, he didn’t realize he had sparked a talent and a long-term career path. But several years later, the high school senior at North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) was featured in a museum magazine cover story and booked his first job as a wedding photographer.

A year after he perfected his considerable skills on his phone, his parents got him a Cannon Rebel digital 35mm camera. He realized he wanted to turn his passion into a career and started taking business classes through NCVA’s Occupational Course of Study (OCS) so he could balance his creative talents with business acumen.

Honored by a Local Museum

Because Tristan’s favorite photo subject is nature, he volunteers his time at The Schiele, Gastonia’s local natural science museum. As a result, museum curators got to know Tristan’s work, and they not only featured him in their printed magazine but one of his photos was also hung in the museum.

He recently dipped his toe into the world of documentary-style photos and portraits, shooting his first wedding in October 2024. He says he has enjoyed expanding his range to do both styles of photography. “It’s really fun to be able to do either,” he says.

Developing his Portfolio

Through his OCS classes at NCVA, Tristan is learning important skills that will help him run his business as it grows after graduation. His teachers are also helping him build a portfolio of his work to help him pursue his professional goals.

“I like my teachers, and I like the flexibility of my classes so I can spend time on my photography,” says Tristan.

At North Carolina Virtual Academy, we take pride in providing students with opportunities to explore their talents and passions. We’re excited to see what the future holds for Tristan and where his journey takes him next!
