Finding Comfort and Confidence at North Carolina Virtual Academy
For Jayden, a junior at North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), the path to success hasn’t always been easy – but it’s been transformative.
Having enrolled at NCVA in fourth grade, Jayden has spent years growing more confident within the virtual learning environment.
“Overall, NCVA has been a great help to my learning and just my environment,” he shared. “It’s been very supportive and a very comfortable place to learn.”
A Learning Environment That Makes a Difference
Before enrolling at NCVA, Jayden faced challenges in a traditional school setting, particularly with anxiety. The shift to virtual learning gave him the space he needed to thrive.
“When I was in [brick and mortar] public school, I was struggling with anxiety,” he explained. “But here, it’s more on your time instead of theirs. There’s a lot more freedom and balance in your life.”
His daily schedule reflects that balance. With live classes in the morning and independent work in the afternoon, Jayden has learned to manage his time effectively while still enjoying life outside of school.
“Once you finish your work, you’re pretty much free for the rest of the day,” he said. “It’s very balanced.”
A Family Transformed
For Jayden’s mom, Paula, the impact of NCVA goes far beyond academics – it’s personal.
“NCVA saved our family,” she said. “Jayden had a really hard time in public school. His anxiety was through the roof, and it just wasn’t working.”
Determined to find a better solution, their family made the transition to virtual learning and almost immediately saw a difference.
“It’s been a blessing,” Paula shared. “The materials, the teachers, the support – it’s amazing. They truly care about the students.”
With both parents involved as learning coaches, Jayden has a strong support system at home, helping him stay engaged and motivated.
Supportive Teachers and Meaningful Connections
One of the standout aspects of Jayden’s experience has been the dedication of his teachers and advisor.
“The teachers are amazing,” he said. “They truly are looking out for you. I don’t have anything negative to say about any of them.”
Even in a virtual environment, those connections matter. While online learning can look different socially, Jayden has found comfort in a more focused and less distracting setting.
“It’s a lot more comfortable,” he said. “You don’t have to worry about distractions or bullying – it’s a relief at the end of the day.”
Looking Towards the Future
As Jayden prepares for his senior year, he already has his sights set on the future, including plans to attend a four-year college and participate in early college opportunities.
With a strong academic foundation and a supportive environment behind him, he’s ready for what comes next.
And for families considering virtual learning, Jayden offers some simple advice:
“It’s different – but once you get used to it, it’s a lot more comfortable.”
