Stories & Spotlights
Kristina Rodrigues NCVA Executive Director

Kristina Rodrigues’ career didn’t start in education – it began in international political science, finance, and corporate operations. But as her two sons entered school, she found herself increasingly drawn to education, discovering a passion for supporting students and teachers alike.

That move – or “leap of faith,” as she calls it – led her into the classroom and eventually into leadership. She joined North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) in 2021 as a lead teacher, quickly advancing to academic administrator, and now executive director.

“I kind of feel like NCVA is my home,” she said. “It’s an environment that allows me to utilize both of my skills – from the operations standpoint, but also the connection with kids.”

A Teacher at Heart

Rodrigues never saw herself as a teacher: “I actually never thought I would be a teacher – I would have laughed if you had said that,” she shared with a smile.

And now, as a leader, she still treasures her days in the classroom. “I absolutely loved being a teacher. I still keep in contact with my kids today – one of them just finished her master’s and called me with questions about her 401k. That makes my heart melt.”

She carries that same philosophy into her leadership style: “Teachers are here to support students, administrators are here to support teachers, and I’m here to support everyone.”

Long-Term Thinking

With a strong background in finance and operations, Rodrigues has a passion for strategy, planning, and data.

“I’m a big data girl,” she admits. “The numbers tell part of the story, but I always want to dig into the story behind the data – why students come to NCVA and how we can help them flourish.”

Her vision is both student-centered and future-focused: “It’s not just about what kids need now, but what they’ll need in the future. Whether that’s through our CTE programs or soft skills, we want them prepared to be successful beyond graduation.”

Looking Ahead

For Rodrigues, the “why” of her work is simple: “I love when students have that ‘aha’ moment and turn on to learning. We’re a place for everyone, and when a student succeeds at their ability, that’s a win.”

As she steps into her new role as the executive director Rodrigues is excited to continue strengthening NCVA’s community and expanding opportunities for students across the state.

“Our future is together,” she said. “NCVA is different, and I’m proud to call it home.”

How lucky we are to be that home!
