LaNiya’s Journey to NCVA

Stories & Spotlights
Student Spotlight

We are excited to introduce LaNiya – a 2025 graduate of North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), a leader among her peers, and a future Radford University student.

Discovering Confidence Through Virtual Learning

LaNiya first joined NCVA after moving from Virginia during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many students found this time disruptive, but for LaNiya, it opened new doors.

“Virtual school helped me come out of my shell,” she says. “I’m introverted in person, but NCVA gave me the chance to express myself more freely. I’ve been able to connect with classmates and teachers in ways that feel more personal – even from a distance.”

One of the biggest myths about virtual learning is the lack of social interaction, but LaNiya found a completely different experience. Through virtual tools like Kahoot, live sessions and collaborative projects, she’s made real connections.

“Our classes are fun and interactive. We joke around just like in a regular classroom – it’s actually been more engaging for me.”

Finding Her Path Through Creativity

LaNiya found her spark through NCVA’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, where she explored courses in culinary arts and fashion and apparel.

“Fashion reawakened my creative side,” she says. “It reminded me of when I used to design dresses as a kid. And culinary taught me real-life skills – I didn’t know how to cook before!”

After graduation, LaNiya is heading to Radford University, where she’ll major in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

“I’ve always been interested in diagnostics and medical work,” she explains. “While art and design will always be hobbies I love, my goal is to work in labs, analyzing blood samples and contributing to healthcare.”

Leading and Mentoring Through SkillsUSA

One of the highlights of LaNiya’s high school career has been developing her leadership through SkillsUSA, a student organization focused on developing career and technical skills. She has held several roles including data analyst, communications officer and social media marketer. She also contributed to a unique “Jump into STEM” initiative, where high school students mentored younger students on career paths. Whether she was sending funding emails, analyzing feedback, or helping plan events like NCVA’s pumpkin carving contest, LaNiya brought professionalism and creativity to every project.

Support at Home

LaNiya’s mother, Felicia, has been an enthusiastic supporter of virtual education – both for her own family and for others.

“People worry about socialization or support,” she says. “But NCVA has given us everything we needed – academic resources, social opportunities, and a strong support system. I recommend it to everyone.”

When asked what she would say to a family considering NCVA, LaNiya doesn’t hesitate: “It’s flexible, it’s fun, and it gives you space to grow into yourself. I’ve had more opportunities to lead and connect here than ever before.”

As she prepares for college, LaNiya will be taking leadership experience, confidence and purpose with her. NCVA didn’t just give her an education – it gave her a platform to shine.
