Balancing Elite Hockey and Online Learning at North Carolina Virtual Academy

Stories & Spotlights

For eighth-grader Lillian, hockey isn’t just a sport: it’s a way of life. A student at North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), Lillian is a dedicated goalie who travels nearly every weekend to compete at a high level, all while keeping up with school through a flexible online learning environment.

“I started playing when I was about five,” Lillian shared. “I play on one of the higher-level teams, and we have something almost every week.”

This is Lillian’s first year at NCVA, following a previous year in another online school. The move was a natural next step for a student-athlete whose schedule is shaped by practices, games and travel.

“I do a lot of school in the car,” she said. “That’s what’s nice about online learning – you can bring it with you wherever you go.”

A Goalie, with Big Goals

Lillian plays goalie for the Triple A Junior Canes girls team, competing in the highly competitive 14U age group. She practices multiple times a week, Monday through Wednesday, and often adds weekend practices to stay game-ready.

While Lillian is modest about her accomplishments, her performance speaks volumes. This season, she is currently ranked number one in the National Girls Hockey League for goalies, leading her league in both save percentage and goals-against average.

When asked what she loves most about hockey, Lillian kept it simple.

“I just like playing,” she said. “Just the fun of it.”

Travel, Teamwork and New Friendships

One of Lillian’s favorite parts of hockey is the opportunity to travel and meet new people.

“I really like traveling,” she shared. “I get to tell people I’ve been places they’ve never been. Most of my friends now are from hockey: from teams, camps and summer programs.”

Although her team focuses more on showcases than tournaments, the exposure and experience are helping prepare Lillian for what comes next. Her long-term goal is to continue playing in college, and she hopes to remain in online learning through high school to support that path.

“That’s the plan,” Lillian said when asked about continuing online school. “So I can keep playing hockey.”

Why NCVA Works for Student-Athletes

For Lillian and her family, NCVA provides the ability to support an athletic schedule without sacrificing academics.

“I like NCVA,” she said. “It works with my hockey.”

With the freedom to learn from anywhere and a schedule built around her commitments, Lillian is able to focus on both her education and her future in the sport she loves. Whether she’s stopping shots or logging into class from the road, Lillian is proving that with the right support, student-athletes don’t have to choose between school and their dreams.

NCVA’s NCAA-approved status supports every athlete to not only achieve their academic dreams but chase their athletic passion.
