Student Spotlight: One Student on Finding His Rhythm at North Carolina Virtual Academy
For Max, a senior at North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), this year marks both a milestone and a launch point. At 18-years-old, he is preparing to graduate – and getting ready to take his next big step toward college, with plans to attend college.
Max has been part of NCVA for seven years, a journey that began when his family was exploring a more personalized and learning option. Today, Max and his two siblings attend the school, making virtual learning a true family experience.
One of Max’s favorite parts of online learning is the independence it offers.
“If I work hard and stay focused, I can finish my schoolwork early and use the rest of the day for things I enjoy,” he shared. From exercising to shooting hoops outside, the flexibility of his schedule has helped him build strong time-management skills – skills that will serve him well in the future.
A Longtime Student, a Standout Senior
Over the years, Max has taken advantage of both academic and social opportunities at NCVA. He is a member of the senior Beta Club and has participated in in-person events such as school dances and special gatherings that help bring the virtual community together.
Max also speaks highly of the teachers who make learning engaging – especially his Spanish teacher, whose sense of humor and classroom environment helped make a challenging subject more enjoyable.
With a 4.0 GPA and graduation just around the corner, Max is staying focused on finishing strong while preparing for the transition to college life.
Music – Both a Passion and an Outlet
Music plays a central role in Max’s life. He grew up surrounded by it, thanks to his dad, a jazz drummer who encouraged him to explore different instruments. Over time, Max found his place with stringed instruments – guitar, bass, mandolin, and even a bit of banjo and piano.
While guitar is his favorite – especially because it allows him to sing and play at the same time – Max also plays bass for his church and occasionally performs at local open mic nights. He even writes his own music, using songwriting as a creative outlet and a way to work through everyday challenges.
Recently, Max has taken on a new role as a music mentor, teaching guitar lessons in the neighborhood and helping younger students learn new, popular songs.
Balancing School, Work and Future Goals
Outside of school and music, Max works as a cashier at Hardee’s, where he has been part of the team for nearly two years. The job has helped him develop responsibility, communication skills, and confidence in a professional setting.
Looking ahead, Max plans to study engineering – an ideal fit for his problem-solving mindset. Music will remain a creative outlet, even as he focuses on building a career in a technical field.
With years of virtual learning behind him and a strong sense of direction ahead, Max is graduating with far more than credits – he’s leaving NCVA with confidence, independence, and a rhythm all his own.
