Building Meaningful Connections in a Virtual World: Meet Ms. Hampton, Advisor at NCVA

Stories & Spotlights

When Ms. Hampton joined North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) in the fall of 2024, she wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. With a background that spanned everything from helping run a family daycare to working in an eye clinic, she wondered how her experience would translate into the virtual school environment.

It didn’t take long to realize she had found the right fit.

“This role actually is perfect for me because I do love to help people,” she shared. “As advisors, we get to build rapport with families and be that first point of contact.”

A Trusted Connection for Families

In a virtual setting, connection looks different – but for Ms. Hampton, it’s just as meaningful. She serves as a central point of contact for students and families, helping them navigate everything from onboarding to ongoing support.

“Even if I don’t have the answer, I can at least point them in the right direction,” she said. “It’s nice to be that sounding board.”

That role becomes even more important during challenging times. During her very first semester, families were impacted by Hurricane Helene, and Ms. Hampton saw firsthand how critical her role could be.

“We weren’t just helping students get back into school,” she explained. “Families needed resources – water, support, anything we could find. It really brought us together as a community.”

Supporting Students Every Step of the Way

With nearly 200 students on her caseload, Ms. Hampton focuses much of her time on those who need extra support – particularly high school students who may be falling behind.

“We try to meet with students who are failing two or more classes at least once a week,” she said. “It gives them dedicated time to catch up and adds that layer of accountability.”

She also works closely with parents to ensure students stay on track.

“That accountability layer is shared,” she explained. “I can only do so much on my end, so I work with families to make sure students are showing up, staying engaged, and completing their work.”

Celebrating Small Wins

For Ms. Hampton, the most rewarding moments come from seeing progress – no matter how small.

“I love those small victories,” she said. “When a student goes from failing three classes to just one – that’s huge.”

She also values the lighter moments, like weekly social sessions where students can relax, play games, and share their creative interests.

“It’s a chance to connect beyond academics,” she said. “We build real relationships.”

Looking Ahead

As she prepares for her second full year, Ms. Hampton is excited to strengthen those connections even further – starting from day one.

“We’re really focusing on building strong engagement during the first week of school,” she said. “If families feel confident and connected early on, it sets the tone for the entire year.”

For Ms. Hampton, it all comes back to connection, compassion, and showing up when it matters most.

“I’m honored when families trust me,” she said. “Life happens and I just want to be there to support them however I can.”
