Helping Students Find Their Purpose: Meet NCVA’s Dr. Carolyn Brown
For Dr. Carolyn Brown, education has never been just a job – it’s a calling. As one of the National Honor Society advisors and Credit Recovery Program Coordinator at North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), she spends every day working to help students discover their strengths, step into leadership, and see what’s possible for their future.
“Purpose drives me,” she shared. “And when purpose drives you, you can’t go wrong.”
After more than 30 years working in education – including roles as a teacher and school administrator – she transitioned to virtual learning during the height of the pandemic. That move helped her return to the heart of why she got into education in the first place: to support students in fulfilling their purpose and destiny.
Growing Leaders Through Service
At NCVA, Dr. Brown and co-advisor Reshea Smith lead a group of National Honor Society (NHS) students driven by excellence and service.
“Our NHS officers are go-getters,” Dr. Brown said proudly. “They’re already taking college courses and serve as phenomenal role models.”
Last year, the group recently earned a National Honor Society Character Excellence Award for a project focused on service and leadership. And this year they’re already working on their next initiative – an arts-focused kindness project connecting elementary, middle, and high school students.
“We want them to feel the impact of service,” Dr. Brown explained. “It’s about thinking outside of yourself – reaching out to someone else – and sparking a love for leadership.”
The Journey to Education
Dr. Brown didn’t originally intend to become an educator. Growing up as the youngest of 10 children and losing her father at age 10, she set her sights on becoming a pediatrician.
But after working in medical research – and one unforgettable moment in an autopsy lab – she realized it wasn’t the medical profession she was drawn to – it was the children.
A college professor recognized the gift she hadn’t yet seen in herself.
“He looked at me and said, ‘You are an educator.’ That changed everything.”
She moved into teaching and has not looked back.
Helping Students Discover Who They’re Meant to Be
In addition to her work at NCVA, Dr. Brown teaches an online course at Guilford Technical Community College, helping students explore careers through strengths-based assessments and real-world planning.
“Sometimes students think they must have it all figured out,” she said. “But discovering what you’re wired for – that’s the key.”
Whether it’s an NHS scholar leading a project or a credit-recovery student rebuilding confidence, Dr. Brown sees the same spark – students finding their passion and pursuing a future with purpose.
Preparing Leaders – One Student at a Time
Dr. Brown believes that every student can succeed when given the right tools, support and opportunity.
“The children are our future leaders,” she said. “Helping them become confident in who they are – that’s what fulfills me.”
With her guidance, NCVA students aren’t just earning credits or filling resumes. They’re discovering who they are meant to be and taking bold steps toward what’s next.
