NCVA Student Featured at Capitol Day
This school year brought more than just academic growth for NCVA student Jurni – it brought a moment she’ll never forget at the North Carolina State Capitol.
In August 2024, Jurni made the switch to NCVA looking for a safer, more flexible learning environment. What she didn’t expect was that virtual learning would open the door to leadership moments on a grand scale.
Capitol Day: A Platform for Student Voices
One of Jurni’s standout experiences with NCVA came during Parents for School Options Capitol Day, an event that brings together families, educators and lawmakers to advocate for school choice. Jurni attended the event expecting to observe and learn – but she ended up doing something far more memorable.
At the last minute, Jurni was invited to present an award to North Carolina State Representative Hugh Blackwell, honoring his support for school choice. “She was nervous, but so excited,” Jurni’s mother, Shanita, said. “Getting to speak with lawmakers and share her personal experience with NCVA was empowering.”
Jurni also participated in a General Assembly announcement recognizing NCVA and school choice initiatives. She took the opportunity to talk about her educational experience and her future goals – which include a career in environmental or family law. It was a proud moment for both mother and daughter, and a reminder of how student voices can shape the future of education policy.
Why NCVA Works for Jurni
While Capitol Day was a highlight, the day-to-day benefits of NCVA are just as impactful for the family. “Being able to work at her own pace has been a game-changer for Jurni,” Shanita shares. “The communication with teachers, the flexibility with scheduling — it’s made a huge difference.”
NCVA’s program has allowed Jurni to stay on track even during life’s unpredictable moments. Access to recorded lessons and supportive teachers has created a learning environment where she can truly thrive.
Outside of school, Jurni is active in her church, participates in Girl Scouts, and is currently working on an environmental project as she pursues the Girl Scout Gold Award.
With NCVA, she’s not only gaining a strong academic foundation but also the confidence and flexibility to lead in her own unique way.
As Shanita puts it: “NCVA has given us the chance to be more present, more involved, and more in tune with what Jurni needs to succeed – both in school and in life.”
