Finding the Right Fit: How NCVA Helped One Family Thrive
For Krista and her family, North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) has been more than a school – it has been a place where she and her sister have been able to learn, grow, and pursue their passions in an environment that meets their unique needs.
Krista, a senior, has been part of NCVA since first grade. Her younger sister, Sammy, is preparing to enter middle school after attending NCVA since kindergarten. Their mother, Lacey, who serves as their Learning Coach, says choosing virtual education has been one of the best decisions their family has made.
Opportunities to Grow Beyond the Classroom
Krista has embraced nearly every opportunity available at NCVA. She is active in SkillsUSA, Student Council, and the school newsletter, while also balancing a part-time job and her work toward earning the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award.
Her passion for emergency management recently earned her first place in a SkillsUSA Community Emergency Response Team competition, where she demonstrated first aid, triage, splinting, and firefighting skills. After graduation, she plans to study either emergency management or culinary arts.
“NCVA has made me more confident,” Krista shared. “I used to be really quiet, but my teachers encouraged me to speak up and get involved.”
Personalized Learning for Every Student
For Sammy, NCVA has provided the individualized support she needs to succeed. Diagnosed with autism at a young age, she has benefited from targeted reading intervention and a learning environment with fewer distractions, allowing her to stay on track academically while building confidence.
Lacey says the personalized attention and communication from teachers have made all the difference.
“If my girls need help, it’s a phone call or an email away,” she said. “I don’t have to wait until report cards to know how they’re doing. I’m part of their learning every day.”
Building Community Through Virtual Learning
While some families worry about socialization in an online school, the entire family says those concerns disappear once students get involved. From prom and field trips to SkillsUSA, Student Council, Girl Scouts, and family-organized outings, both girls have built lasting friendships and meaningful connections.
“People are always surprised by how much socialization there is,” Krista said. “There are clubs, events, virtual activities, and opportunities to meet classmates throughout the year.”
After more than a decade with NCVA, Krista and her family continue to recommend the school to others looking for a supportive learning environment. For them, NCVA has provided the perfect balance of academic excellence, personal growth, and family involvement – helping both daughters prepare confidently for whatever comes next.
