Alumnus Spotlight: Bryce’s NCVA Success Story
When Bryce enrolled in North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) as a third‑grader, he had no idea what his future looked like. When he entered high school and was still uncertain about his path, Bryce signed up for a Career & Technical Education (CTE) culinary elective, and everything changed.
A Culinary Spark in a Virtual Setting
Thanks to teacher Lisa Malkiewicz (“Ms. Mac”), the CTE culinary course wasn’t just about reading recipes. It was hands-on and skill-focused. Students submitted weekly assignments with step-by-step photos – showing off knife skills, stovetop techniques, and plating of food – so Ms. Mac could give real feedback on everything from julienne cuts to food safety temps.
The Confidence to Keep Cooking
By the time Bryce graduated from NCVA in December 2022, he could rattle off knife cuts older culinary students hadn’t heard of. That head start eased the transition to Fayetteville Technical Community College’s Culinary Arts program, where he enrolled shortly after earning his NCVA diploma.
“College chefs asked about mirepoix and julienne,” Bryce’s mom, Renee, recalls. “Bryce already knew, thanks to NCVA, so he walked in feeling prepared.”
From Student to Chef with Big Dreams
Bryce graduated from FTCC with an associate degree in culinary arts in May 2025. He now works for a catering company, preparing food for large-scale events, often serving as a waiter. This real-world experience is helping him sharpen his skills and shape his future.
With the money he’s earned through his culinary work, Bryce recently bought his first home – a major step toward independence, and just the beginning.
“NCVA gave me the space to figure out what I was good at,” Bryce says. “Now I get to do something I love, and I’m working toward my own food truck. It feels really good to have a plan.”
Bryce is already saving for a food truck, and he’s excited to share his talent – and his food – with his community in Western Harnett County. With a military base nearby and new families moving in every day, he sees a great opportunity.
From his first day in culinary class to his newest catering gig, Bryce is building a future he can be proud of – one well-prepared plate at a time.
