William’s Journey with North Carolina Virtual Academy
At North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), we’re committed to helping students thrive in an environment that prioritizes both safety and academic success. William is a shining example of a determined student who found the perfect fit in virtual education and is now on a fast track to college … and beyond.
A Positive Pandemic Pivot
William joined NCVA in 8th grade during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the original decision was driven by health factors, it quickly became clear that he was thriving more than ever before.
“I realized I was actually learning more and staying more focused without all the noise and distractions of a traditional classroom,” William says.
Before coming to NCVA, William had faced some difficult experiences in the classroom, including serious safety concerns.
After seeing the positive shift, William’s family made the choice to keep him at NCVA for the remainder of his education. It wasn’t just about academics – it was about creating a safe and supportive environment where William could truly succeed.
Finishing High School – and Earning a Degree
Not one to shy away from a challenge, William took his education a step further. During high school, he enrolled in Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) through NCVA’s dual enrollment program. This has allowed him to earn college credit while completing high school requirements, and he recently graduated with both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree.
“It took a lot of coordination and paperwork, but it was completely worth it,” William says. “I got to take real college classes in English, math, and history and they counted toward both my diplomas.”
Partnership and Support Made it Possible
William’s success in the dual enrollment wouldn’t have been possible without NCVA counselor Erin Farmer, who played a key role in guiding him through the process.
“Ms. Farmer was amazing,” says William’s mother, Minnie. “She stayed on top of every detail – applications, transcripts, course approvals, even reference letters. She made everything so much easier.”
Thanks to the strong partnership between NCVA, William and his family, he was able to manage both high school and college-level coursework with confidence.
The Future Looks Bright
William will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), where he plans to major in computer engineering – a field that combines his love for coding with hands-on problem solving.
“I’m really excited for the next chapter,” William says. “NCVA helped me build a strong foundation, and I feel ready for what’s next.”
William is already thinking ahead to internships, research opportunities, and how he can make an impact in the tech world.
A Grateful Student – and Family
Reflecting on William’s journey, Minnie adds:
“NCVA truly changed the trajectory of his life. We’re so grateful, not just for the academics, but for the peace of mind and encouragement we’ve had along the way.”
