FAQs
Technical FAQs
Do I need to have access to a computer to attend?
Yes. However, based on financial need and eligibility, North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) may loan a computer system (including computer and printer) to support the learning process. These computer systems are instructional property and must be returned when the student leaves the school. NCVA will arrange for technical support and troubleshooting for these systems. Each family will need to secure their own internet service provider. In certain cases, based on financial need or other circumstances, NCVA may provide a stipend to offset the cost of internet service. This determination will take place during the enrollment process.
What computer skills are required?
The Learning Coach needs to have at least basic computer skills. Use of the computer is an important part of the online school program. In the elementary grades, mostly the Learning Coach interacts with the computer. Middle school and high school students are most successful if they have basic computer skills.
Do I need high speed internet access to attend?
No. Although high-speed internet access makes the experience of learning online much more satisfying, it is not absolutely necessary. Some geographic areas unfortunately do not have high-speed access available. However, for those areas that do, it is the preferred type of access for the program.
How do I get technical support?
NCVA families needing customer care or technical support for computers or the online school can call 866.512.2273 (select option 2).
What does the computer system loaned by NCVA include?
Computers loaned by NCVA follow the technical specs listed here.
What happens if the systems are down?
As with any technology, there are times when it may not work properly. There could be a problem with a family’s local internet or computer or an NCVA outage. We call these instances “fire drills.” But we have a plan in place in the event of an interruption so students can continue their schooling. Learn more here.
