What tests will my child be required to take?
All North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) students are required to take the following tests:
- Course lesson assessments
- Course unit assessments
- Semester assessments
- Diagnostic and formative assessments measuring mastery of grade-level standards. NCVA uses NWEA's measures of academic progress (MAP) assessments for reading and math. These computer-adaptive assessments are offered at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year to track student growth. The data from these assessments is used to shape instruction to benefit students.
- North Carolina end-of-grade assessments: These state-mandated assessments are administered the last 10 days of school and are used to create NCVA's school report card while also tracking student growth. These scores are not counted as part of the student's final grade.
- Grade 3: Reading and math assessments are administered primarily as multiple-choice tests. If student have not been proficient in the reading portion and were not proficient in the beginning of grade reading assessment, then students will be given the Read to Achieve assessment as another multiple-choice test.
- Grade 4: Reading and math assessments administered as multiple-choice tests
- Grades 5 and 8: Reading, math, and science assessments administered primarily as a multiple-choice test. The math assessment may include gridded response questions.
- Grades 6 and 7: Reading and math assessments administered primarily as a multiple-choice test. The math assessment may include gridded response questions.
- North Carolina end-of-course assessments: These state-mandated assessments are administered the last five days of each semester and are used to create NCVA's school report card while also tracking student growth. The individual student score for each state assessment counts as 20% of the final grade for the course.
